Yuanley YS25-0801P Switch Review: Exploring the 2.5GbE and PoE Capabilities

Deluxe company -

The Yuanley YS25-0801P is a combination of 2.5GbE and SFP+ switch that offers a unique feature. It shares similarities with the YuanLey YS25-0801 8-port 2.5GbE 1-port 10GbE switch that we previously reviewed, but it includes PoE/PoE+ capabilities and has a distinct appearance. Thus, we were intrigued to disassemble it to understand its functionality better.

For those interested in purchasing this switch, here’s an Amazon affiliate link. While our main focus has shifted to the 10GbE series, we still explore some of these less powerful 2.5GbE models. Interestingly, during our tests, we encountered a new switch chip that we haven’t seen for a considerable time in these devices.

Yuanley YS25-0801P Switch Review: 2.5GbE and PoE Hardware Overview

The switch’s front features eight 2.5GbE ports along with an additional SFP+ 10G port. We often refer to setups like this as 8+1, which helps to categorize them amid other configurations like 4+2, 5+1, or 8+2. This specific 8+1 model was among the pioneers to considerably reduce pricing in its sector.

These eight 2.5GbE ports are also PoE/PoE+ capable. Our testing with the Fluke 5018508 did not reveal PoE++ 802.3bt support on these ports. However, for most applications like cameras, PoE and PoE+ provide sufficient power. For high-performance WiFi APs requiring 2.5GbE uplinks, PoE+ may fall short in power capacity.

Having previously reviewed the YS25-0801, it might be easy to presume this model is merely its PoE-equipped counterpart. A look at the front of the YS25-0801 reveals a much more compact design, with the 10G SFP+ port positioned closer to the 2.5GbE ports, indicating a differently designed PCB, not just a standard one enhanced with PoE capabilities.

One side of the unit features a vent.

The opposite side includes an unoccupied port for a fan.

On the back, there is a notable change with the integration of an internal power supply as opposed to an external one.

The underside of the device features a label indicating that the maximum output of the power supply is 120W. Considering the switch consumes less than 20W, this leaves approximately 100W for the Power over Ethernet (PoE) budget.

Upon removing the top cover of the YuanLey, its internal components are revealed, showing both the power supply and the main switch PCB.

Veteran followers will recognize similarities between this and the Davuaz Da-K9801WP reviewed earlier, particularly in terms of the internal configurations and even identical switch PCB revision numbers.

Here is the power supply. This is the same HI-POWER120W-L-V6.0 that was in the Davuaz.

Here is the familiar 2-chip Realtek solution. It appears as though the person gluing the heatsinks onto the Realtek chips did not care about how well aligned they are.

We also see a Realtek RTL8238B onboard.
