The Mozilla Firefox 124 open-source and cross-platform web browser is now ready for download pending its official release today (March 19th, 2024). As a result, it’s an excellent time to review the new features and enhancements.
The Mozilla Firefox 124 seems to be a minor update that not only modifies the Caret Browsing mode for use in the PDF viewer but also supports the Screen Wake Lock API to prevent device screens from dimming or screen locking when an application needs to continue running.
This version further supports the creation of WebSockets using HTTP(S) and relative URLs, as well as the AbortSignal: any() static method, a method that accepts an array of abort signals and outputs an AbortSignal
(More data can be found here).
For Android users, Firefox 124 activates the Pull to Refresh feature, which is stronger than ever, as a default action and supports the HTML drag and drop API for mouse usage. It also supports plain text or HTML text for drop operations from external programs.
On macOS, the new release utilizes the fullscreen
API for all manner of full-screen windows, ensuring a more coherent user experience in line with customary macOS full-screen spaces, the Menubar, and the Dock. To omit this feature, the full-screen-api.macos-native-full-screen
preference must be toggled to false
within about:config.
Throughout its public beta testing, Firefox 124 put forth the highly-anticipated Cookie Banner Blocker function, which is commanded by Firefox to automatically reject cookie banners. In conjunction, the Quick Actions tool allows rapid execution of several tasks from the address bar. Unfortunately, these enhancements were only available until the release of the sixth beta version and thus, do not appear in the final iteration.
As stated previously, the formal announcement of the Firefox 124 launch will occur on the upcoming date of March 19, 2024. Until this day arrives, the official DEB package for Ubuntu/Debian distributions, the tarball binary for Linux, as well as binaries for macOS and Windows systems, can all be procured from Mozilla’s downloading platform.
