The Fedora Project announced recently a new group of Fedora Linux variations called Fedora Atomic Desktops. This serves as a collective term for all existing and upcoming Fedora Linux variations that provide an unchanging file system, founded on rpm-ostree.
Project Atomic was announced approximately a decade ago. It is composed of a set of packages from an OS that are assembled with rpm-ostree to build a file system tree that can be deployed and updated as a single unit.
Since its inception, Project Atomic has already experienced several variations, including Fedora Silverblue (formerly known as Fedora Atomic Workstation), Fedora Kinoite, Fedora Sericea, and lastly Fedora Onyx, which utilizes the Budgie desktop environment.
The Fedora Atomic Desktops brand was created as a solution for making the naming of future atomic variations simpler. It aims to make it easier for users to utilize these unchanging Fedora Linux variations that are based on rpm-ostree. Additionally, it plans to include more atomic variations with different desktop environments.
At the time of writing, the Fedora Atomic Desktops line comprises four atomic variations, namely Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Kinoite, Fedora Sway Atomic (previously Fedora Sericea), and Fedora Budgie Atomic (previously Fedora Onyx).
The operating system’s character is more accurately conveyed by atomicity than immutability.
The Fedora Project anticipates more Fedora Linux variations to become part of the Fedora Atomic Desktops line. These may showcase desktop environments such as Xfce (Fedora Vauxite Atomic), as well as the Pantheon from elementary OS or the forthcoming COSMIC desktop from System76 that is written in Rust.
Finally, the Fedora Atomic Desktops line was also developed to provide a more precise way of discussing how rpm-ostree operates, highlighting that Fedora Atomic spins are not truly immutable since there are methods to bypass the read-only features of immutability on a Fedora Atomic spin.
