Problem Explanation
The difficulty centers around the Citrix Session Recording Agent version 2411, which was rolled out in December 2024. While affected systems can initially download and apply the January updates successfully, problems arise during the required restart to finalize the installation. Users receive an error message indicating a rollback of the updates, reverting them to their previous Windows configurations.
Microsoft assesses this issue may impact only a limited number of organizations since version 2411 is relatively new and likely not overly prevalent among home users.

Citrix has responded by providing a guide with potential solutions for affected users. However, Citrix claims that additional operating systems could also be impacted contrary to Microsoft’s earlier assertion—this includes versions such as Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025, alongside various desktop editions of Windows 10 and 11.
To successfully install the January security updates, Citrix recommends that users stop the “Citrix Session Recording Monitor” service, disable its startup type before installing the updates, and then restore the service and its startup type once the installation is complete. Citrix has offered specific PowerShell commands and command line instructions to facilitate these steps, which are also applicable for uninstalling the updates if needed.
Microsoft further notes that it is collaborating with Citrix to resolve the issue, promising a more streamlined solution for users in the future.
