Today, Canonical unveiled the beta version of the forthcoming Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) operating system, which is scheduled for a final release on October 10th, 2024. This early peek is available for public testing and occurs just three weeks before the stable version is set to be launched.

The highlight of this beta release is that it debuts with the newly released GNOME 47 desktop environment and runs on the cutting-edge Linux 6.11 kernel series.

Notable features in Ubuntu 24.10 include an enhanced desktop installer that supports local file paths for autoinstall import, refined Power Profiles Manager better suited for the latest AMD processors, and upgraded fingerprint device support.

Additionally, it introduces a new Security Center that offers users the option to toggle on or off the experimental permissions prompting feature for Home directory permissions. The App Center has been improved with several updates to its Manage page, and further stability and performance enhancements have been implemented with additional patches for Mutter and GNOME Shell.

Another significant update in the forthcoming Ubuntu 24.10 release benefits NVIDIA graphics users, as Oracular Oriole will primarily use Wayland over Xorg on systems equipped with NVIDIA GPUs. The new release will introduce several default setting modifications, influenced largely by updates in packages.

Internally, Ubuntu 24.10 is upgraded with a new toolchain featuring GCC 14.2, GNU Binutils 2.43.1, GNU C Library 2.40, LLVM 19, Rust 1.80, Go 1.23, OpenSSL 3.3, systemd 256.5, Netplan 1.1, and .NET 8.

Those eager to test Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) can download the beta version now from the official website. It’s important to note, however, that this is still a beta release and is not advised for deployment in production settings.

Beta versions are offered for various Ubuntu flavours including Desktop, Server, and Cloud, plus the specific versions for Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Kylin, and Ubuntu MATE.
