The standalone Linux distribution NixOS, which can also be utilized on other GNU/Linux distributions and macOS, has announced its latest release, NixOS 24.05. This new version, codenamed “Uakari”, brings support for contemporary technologies and a variety of upgrades.
Arriving six months after NixOS 23.11 “Tapir” , NixOS 24.05 introduces a new LTS (Long Term Support) kernel, Linux 6.6 LTS, designed for enhanced hardware compatibility compared to the Linux 6.1 LTS kernel used in its predecessor.
This edition includes updated versions of the GNOME and KDE Plasma desktop environments, specifically GNOME 46 and KDE Plasma 6. The MATE desktop environment is also upgraded to version 1.28 with an option for Wayland support via the configuration services.xserver.desktopManager.mate.enableWaylandSession.
Additionally, NixOS 24.05 extends its reach by supporting the Lomiri desktop, spearheaded by the UBports Foundation for their Ubuntu Touch mobile OS, a successor to Unity8. Lomiri operates using the Mir 2.x series as its display server, serving also as a Wayland compositor.
The latest NixOS 24.05 release brings several significant upgrades such as zstd compression for firmware blobs across all supported kernels to enhance decompression speeds. Additionally, it’s now possible to install NixOS without the inclusion of Perl, and a new stub ELF loader feature has been introduced which provides an informative error message when users attempt to execute binaries incompatible with NixOS.
