Nitrux developer Uri Herrera announced the release and general availability of Nitrux 3.6 as the latest stable ISO snapshot of this Debian-based, immutable, and systemd-free GNU/Linux distribution.
The monthly Nitrux releases continue with Nitrux 3.6, which is still powered by the Linux 6.9 kernel series in a “Liquorix” flavor for uncompromised responsiveness in interactive systems, and uses a customizable KDE Plasma 5.27.11 LTS desktop experience. Nitrux 3.6 ships with Linux kernel 6.9.12 by default.
Among some of the interesting things included in this release, there’s the upcoming NVIDIA 560 graphics driver, in beta form, which ships with the NVIDIA open-source GPU kernel modules by default, along with the latest NVIDIA GSP firmware. These changes should improve the experience for users of NVIDIA GPUs.
In addition, Nitrux now ships with NVIDIA_OC, a simple command-line tool written in Rust and designed to help users overclock NVIDIA GPUs on Linux systems. For AMD GPU users, Nitrux 3.6 ships with the latest firmware files for the AMDGPU open-source graphics driver. It also features the Mesa 24.1.3 open-source graphics stack.
There are also some desktop changes in the new Nitrux release, such as an updated KWin configuration to improve animation speed, an updated ZSH configuration to ensure that graphical apps using GLX are offloaded to the NVIDIA GPU screen, and an updated TLP configuration to use the intel_pstate module on newer Intel CPUs.
Since the new Nitrux ISO snapshot is targeted at newcomers or those who want to deploy the systemd-free and immutable distro on new machines, it comes with an improved installation experience using the Calamares graphical installer to ensure that the intel_pstate module is enabled in the GRUB bootloader and that sanity checks are enabled for slabs.
Nitrux 3.6 features an updated Debian rootfs fully transitioned to the 64-bit-time, adds the multipath-tools package for maintaining disk multipath device maps and a new udev rule to enable NVMe multipath by default, and adds a monitoring utility to keep the Plasma desktop process alive no matter what.
Last but not least, this release updates AppArmor to version 4.0.1 and removes an AppArmor profile that would cause the Flatpak runtime not to function, updates the Nitrux Update Tool System (NUTS) system upgrade utility to version 2.1.5, and updates the Mozilla Firefox web browser to version 128.0.3.
