New Linux 6.6 LTS Powers Raspberry Pi OS, Enhances Support for Raspberry Pi 5

The Raspberry Pi Foundation unveiled a new build of their Debian-based Raspberry Pi OS for Raspberry Pi single-board computers today. This update includes a new kernel from the Linux 6.6 long-term support series, updated components, and various enhancements.

While it still runs on the latest Debian GNU/Linux 12 “Bookworm” operating system series, Raspberry Pi OS is now driven by the Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series. This is a significant upgrade from the Linux kernel 6.1 LTS used in previous versions. The latest Chromium 122 and Mozilla Firefox 123 web browsers are also included in this update.

The latest Raspberry Pi OS release offers better support for the newly launched Raspberry Pi 5 SBC by enhancing the power button’s handling. Additionally, new settings for headless resolution have been added to the Screen Configuration, and the setting for headless resolution for Wayland has been removed from the Raspberry Pi Configuration.

This update also enhances compatibility with alternative window managers, improves the new dark theme introduced in the previous update by ensuring some widgets are now correctly displayed, and accelerates the loading time of the Bluetooth and Network menus.

Furthermore, taskbar popover windows have been switched out for traditional windows, the shutdown helper has been refined for user process closure when logging out, and the taskbar’s audio icon is now default hidden when no audio devices are attached.

In addition, the latest Raspberry Pi OS update includes a secondary mouse pointer which is displayed during drag-and-drop tasks and amends the raspi-config utility, permitting EEPROM updates.

Equally important, the WayVNC VNC server has been updated for enhanced compatibility with various VNC clients and for systemd control, and numerous bugs leading to overlapping file manager confirmation dialogs, memory leaks in the Volume and Bluetooth menus, and non-GTK headerbar window closure crashes have been fixed.

Finally, bugs hindering the correct GPU load report in the Task Manager and plugin, errors causing the wrong files to be moved during file manager drag-and-drop, bugs preventing the Wayfire keyboard layout settings load, and issues resulting in taskbar-hidden windows on alternate monitors have all been addressed.

A couple of other issues were fixed as well and you can study the full changelog here. Unfortunately, the issue causing wireless networks to not be displayed in the first-run setup wizard on Raspberry Pi 5 is still there, at least for me.

You can download Raspberry Pi OS 2024-03-12 from the official website for all supported Raspberry Pi models. Of course, existing users will be able to update their installations by using the graphical updating utility or by running the sudo apt update && sudo apt full-ugprade commands from a terminal window.
