At the start of this year, the first details regarding the upcoming versions of Windows Server 2025 began to emerge. Now, this edition is officially here: Microsoft declared its general availability on November 1st of this year.

The prior notification can be found in the Windows Release Health Center, and it’s anticipated that Microsoft will share more information about the new server through various platforms soon. The announcement from the developers states: “Windows Server 2025 is now generally available.” This release is a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) version, indicating that Microsoft aims to provide extensive support for Windows Server 2025, with mainstream support concluding in October 2029 and extended support lasting until October 2034, as detailed in the release notes from the Redmond-based company.

Windows Server 2025 brings forth a range of innovative features that were previously unavailable on-premise. For instance, the server supports hot patching, which allows for updates to be applied without requiring a system restart. This capability has been available to test since the end of September in the preview version. Microsoft promoted this feature as a means for administrators to enjoy more quality time with their families over the weekend. However, it’s important to note that this is not a continuous state. Instead of performing twelve reboots each year during patching days, this functionality enables users to manage patches for up to three months without interruption. A system reboot remains mandatory on a quarterly basis.

Moreover, an OpenSSH server that can be easily activated has been included. SMB shares are expected to be more resilient and secure. Enhancements have also been made to Hyper-V, and new security features are set to improve the protection of Active Directory.

At the launch event, the developers highlighted several known issues with Windows Server 2025, as noted in the Windows Release Health Notes. During installation, some text may inadvertently remain in English. Additionally, for systems equipped with a large number of CPU cores—specifically, Microsoft mentions 256 logical cores—the system may exhibit unexpected behavior, such as aborting the installation or becoming unresponsive. Users may also encounter blue screens when starting or restarting the system, with boot times extending to around three hours or even longer. In iSCSI setups, access issues may arise, rendering the boot device inaccessible, which could prevent the system from booting successfully.

IT administrators will obtain Windows Server 2025 through the traditional channels. The German site continues to reference the preview version, but both the ISO images and VHD files can be found on the evaluation page for Windows Server 2025.
