Microsoft Deprecates Maps and Introduces New Features in Windows 11 Update

Microsoft has announced the deprecation of several features in Windows 11, including the Maps app and certain security technologies. This strategic move is part of a broader trend where Microsoft aims to streamline its software.

The Maps app is set to be removed from the Microsoft Store by July 2025. According to the Microsoft Learn site, any updates will render the app nonfunctional after this date. Users who uninstall the app prior to the deadline can reinstall it, but after July 2025, it will be completely unavailable. Additionally, starting with Windows 11 version 24H2, Maps will no longer come preinstalled.

In conjunction with this change, Microsoft is also deprecating the Windows UWP Map control and related APIs. Developers are encouraged to transition to Azure Maps as part of this shift.

Another notable deprecation includes the virtualization-based security (VBS) enclaves for Windows 11 version 23H2 and earlier. While support for VBS will continue in version 24H2 and later, this bifurcation may confuse users. The rationale behind this decision hasn’t been clarified by Microsoft but could relate to the product lifecycle of Windows 11, particularly as older versions approach the end of support.

Microsoft’s emphasis on enhanced security functionality was a significant selling point during Windows 11’s launch. However, had placed much of its focus on the security improvements in newer iterations. The gradual removal of VBS support indicates a desire to concentrate resources on the latest versions, aligning with the evolution of their security methodologies.

Overall, these changes reflect a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy, prioritizing upgrades and newer versions while leaving older features behind.
