As many of us are already taking advantage of the various new features and enhancements of the GNOME 47 “Denver” desktop environment series, the GNOME team has begun development on the subsequent major version, GNOME 48, which is expected to be released on March 19th, 2025.
GNOME 48 will be named “Bengaluru,” after the location of the GNOME Asia Summit 2024 conference, scheduled to be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka, from December 6th to December 8th, 2024. A release timeline has already been made public by the GNOME developers.
According to this timeline, the alpha version of GNOME 48 will be available for public testing starting January 4th, 2025. The beta version is set to be released on February 1st, followed by the Release Candidate (RC) milestone, which is anticipated on March 1st, 2025. The GNOME 48 desktop environment’s final launch is planned for March 19th, 2025.
Here’s a quick overview of the GNOME 48 release schedule for your calendar:
It’s still early to delve into the new features and significant changes that will arrive with the GNOME 48 desktop environment. However, I am eager to see the innovative window management system that incorporates a unique mosaic tiling behavior in this update.
One feature confirmed for GNOME 48 is a vastly enhanced Loupe image viewer, which will be introduced with some thrilling new functionalities, including updated zoom controls. These enhancements will allow users to enter specific zoom percentages, revert to the original “best fit” zoom level, and access shortcuts for frequently used zoom levels.
Additionally, Loupe will introduce an experimental design for dragging images directly into the main window, a RAW image format loader, and initial image editing capabilities such as cropping, as reported by Sophie Herold. I will ensure to keep you informed about all the significant developments expected in GNOME 48 throughout its extensive six-month development cycle.
In the meantime, the GNOME development team has scheduled more updates for the current GNOME 47 desktop environment series, with the next update, GNOME 47.2, anticipated by the end of November or early December 2024. Therefore, be sure to keep your GNOME installations updated at all times.
