Linux Mint is preparing a significant update for its popular Cinnamon desktop environment, as revealed by project leader Clement Lefebvre in the February 2025 newsletter. The upcoming Linux Mint 22.2 will integrate the HWE (Hardware Enablement) Linux kernel 6.11 from Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS.
One of the most noteworthy developments is a revamped application launcher for the Cinnamon desktop. Although a specific release date for the redesigned app menu has not been disclosed, it is expected to coincide with the launch of Cinnamon 6.6.
The new Cinnamon application launcher will feature an expanded side panel that displays the full names of pinned applications, along with standard home folders. Additionally, essential buttons for screen lock, logout, and shutdown will be relocated to the bottom of the application browser, rendering the interface more user-friendly. User names and avatars will also be visible on the side panel.
This upgrade looks promising, and users can anticipate experiencing the new launcher not just in Linux Mint 22.2 but also in any other distributions that adopt the latest Cinnamon desktop environment.
