Linus Torvalds has released the first release candidate for the Linux kernel 6.14, marking it as a relatively small release with over 500,000 lines of modified code. This new candidate, designated as 6.14-rc1, is available for testing and includes more than 10,000 commits and 9,300 merges.
Despite the release being minor compared to others, it introduces several significant updates, particularly focused on x86 architecture, filesystems, networking, hardware support, and security enhancements. Notable improvements include updates to Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS), fixes for CPU speculation, enhancements on Secure Encrypted Virtualization, several filesystem updates, and networking improvements.
The release also adds support for the ARM architecture and improvements for RISC-V hardware. Specifically, it includes preferred core rankings for AMD’s amd-pstate, a new cgroup controller for device memory, a driver for the AMD XDNA Ryzen AI NPU accelerator, support for RISC-V T-Head vector extensions, Rust updates, and enhancements for the Raspberry Pi’s suspend/resume functionality.
Although Torvalds characterized this as a “tiny” release due to the lighter activity during the holiday season, he expressed confidence that the kernel 6.14 will be ready for official release in March 2025. For more details on the release, refer to the Linux Kernel Mailing List.
