The newest release of the Linux kernel, version 6.13, brings significant enhancements, particularly for users on AMD and Apple-based systems. Linus Torvalds, the founder of Linux, commented on the update, stating it mainly consists of final driver fixes (predominantly for GPU and networking), documentation updates, and various minor tweaks.
One notable addition for AMD users is a performance optimizer driver specifically designed for the AMD 3D V-Cache CPUs. This driver, developed in partnership with TSMC utilizing their 3DFabric silicon stacking and advanced packaging technologies, promises to enhance both performance and handling. Additionally, the AMDGPU/AMDKFD driver has been improved with an updated AMDGPU Display Core to ensure compatibility with the LoongArch architecture. A new feature allowing the fan on Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards to remain idle during low GPU temperatures, referred to as the Zero RPM feature, has also been introduced.
Intel is not left out, with initial display support added for Xe3 graphics, which are expected to rollout alongside the Panther Lake CPUs in the near future.
Other changes encompass atomic write support for ext4 and XFS filesystems, compatibility with older Apple iPads and iPhones, real-time kernel support for LoongArch CPUs, and support for Secure Digital Ultra Capacity memory cards, along with the typical assortment of bug fixes.
