Linus Torvalds has announced the release of the first Release Candidate (RC) for the upcoming Linux 6.14 kernel series. This milestone is now available for public testing, just two weeks after the official release of Linux kernel 6.13. With the merge window for Linux 6.14 opened, it is now time for developers and users to begin testing the RC versions weekly leading up to the final release expected in late March 2025.

Among the new features in the Linux 6.14 kernel series are support for amd-pstate preferred core rankings, a new cgroup controller for device memory, and an accelerator driver for the AMD XDNA Ryzen AI NPUs. Noteworthy advancements also include support for SELinux extended permissions, core energy counter support for AMD CPUs, and various power supply extensions that allow new properties to be added from separate drivers. Further enhancements include support for T-Head vector extensions for RISC-V and improved Rust updates for kernel building.

Miguel Ojeda has highlighted the importance of a new macro, derive_coerce_pointee, which is on the path to stabilization, marking a significant step towards building the kernel using only stable Rust features.

Linux kernel 6.14 offers additional features like KVM hypercall service support for usermode VMM on LoongArch, enhanced ACPI support, and new driver additions to improve hardware compatibility. Examples of this include support for the SM8750 platform and MT8188 Mali-G57 MC3 with the Panfrost driver.

Networking improvements in this release feature IPsec support for IP-TFS/AggFrag encapsulation, jumbo data packet transmission capabilities, and enhanced reporting for PHY statistics.

Lastly, the Linux 6.14 kernel is positioned to reduce suspend and resume durations for certain systems, alongside various improvements across audio, power management, and more.

The first Release Candidate can be downloaded from Linus Torvalds’ git tree or from the kernel.org website. Users are advised that this pre-release version is not suitable for production environments. The final release of Linux kernel 6.14 is anticipated for March 23rd or 30th, contingent on the number of Release Candidates announced in the lead-up.
