Every now and then a business finds a perfect charity to partner with. Sometimes it’s because the goals of the business and charity align well. Sometimes it’s because a business’ core values align well with that of the charity. Usually the charities given to by a business are selected because an employee or many employees are affected by a disease or situation that that charity helps.
And sometimes it’s all of the above.
Folding@home (FAH or F@h) is a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics. As of today, the project is using the idle resources of personal computers owned by volunteers from all over the world.
Thousands of people contribute to the success of this project.
The Pande Lab is the founding scientific group of Folding@home. Directed by Professor Vijay Pande, Ph.D., the lab is part of the Departments of Chemistry and of Structural Biology, Stanford University and Stanford University Medical Center, and works on theory and simulations of how proteins, RNA, and nanoscale synthetic polymers fold.
A while back, ColoCrossing began Folding@home. Well, Folding@work might be a bit more accurate. A few employees discovered the Standford University initiative Folding@home and were already folding at home before we got ColoCrossing involved. Since then, we’ve dedicated 10 servers to the protein folding project and couldn’t be happier to be moving up in the ranks!
