Linux Mint 22.1 “Xia” has officially been released, presenting new features and enhancements for users. The release is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and powered by Linux kernel 6.8. It introduces the Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment, which comes with a built-in Night Light feature compatible with both XOrg and Wayland.
Among the significant updates are a new default theme, native dialogs, improved Wayland session capabilities, simplified sound management, and enhanced notification systems. The file management utility, Nemo, has also been improved along with the Bulky file rename tool, which now supports removing accents from filenames and thumbnail support for OpenRaster files.
An essential focus of this release was modernizing APT dependencies. This overhaul was intended to eliminate outdated components and streamline package management tools. These improvements promise better quality translations, simplified architecture, enhanced compatibility with Wayland in Update Manager, and an overall more reliable user experience.
Linux Mint 22.1 is a long-term support release, which means it will receive security updates until 2029. Users can download the new version from the official mirrors provided below.
An announcement regarding additional updates and the upgrade path from Linux Mint 22 is expected at the end of the week as the Linux Mint team noted that these features will also soon be available to LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) users.
