A serious security vulnerability (CVE-2025-24983) has been discovered in older versions of Windows by researchers from IT security firm ESET. This flaw allowed hackers to execute malicious code on affected computers through a zero-day exploit. However, for such an attack to succeed, the targeted device would need to have been previously infected with a backdoor.
The researcher who uncovered the exploit, Filip Jur?acko, explained that the vulnerability was linked to improper memory usage during software operation, enabling hackers to run their own code on compromised machines, potentially resulting in significant damage.
Affected Versions:Older versions of Windows 10, particularly those before build 1809, and Windows 8.1, which is no longer supported by Microsoft, are notably at risk. Additionally, this vulnerability is present in Windows Server 2016, putting businesses at risk of attacks. Although Microsoft continues to provide updates for Windows Server 2016 until January 2027, users of unpatched systems remain highly vulnerable.
Recommendations:Experts recommend transitioning to a current operating system to safeguard against future security weaknesses. Windows 10 users should especially act now, as free support for this version will end in October, after which no free security updates will be available. Those not using Microsoft’s paid extended update service could become targets for cyber attacks, and they may want to consider switching to a more secure operating system.
For more details and remediation steps, Microsoft has released a guide that provides valuable information for users with affected systems.
