The Armbian community has shared with 9to5Linux.com the release details of Armbian 24.8 (Yelt), which marks the latest stable version of this Debian and Ubuntu-based distribution designed for ARM devices.
Arriving three months after Armbian 24.5 , the new update brings increased stability for RK3588 hardware through recent bootloader updates, improved 4K60p video acceleration for KDE Plasma and GNOME versions, and comprehensive support for the BigTreeTech CB1 IO board, enhancing 3D printing endeavors.
This version also enhances support for several new ARM boards, such as Libre Alta, Solitude, Radxa E25, Rock 5C, RISCV64, and Banana Pi F3. It includes 3D acceleration in Debian-based Armbian versions, improved compatibility with the ThinkPad X13s, and
Furthermore, Armbian 24.8 includes the updated Linux 6.10 kernel, enhancing performance and security, extending support to more hardware, and integrating ZFS support. Additionally, it offers long-term support (LTS) for devices like Odroid C1, NanoPi NEO, Banana Pi BPI-M1, ClearFog, Helios64, and TinkerBoard.
There is also good news for those who want to use Armbian with a more rich desktop environment, such as GNOME or KDE Plasma. Starting with this release, there are now official builds pre-installed with GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, and KDE Plasma (from KDE neon) desktop environments.
The Armbian development team also took time to do significant code cleanup ensuring a leaner and more efficient codebase. Older devices have been deprecated as well as Armbian moves to mainline-only support for many devices.
Last but not least, experimental support for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) is also here as it’s entering its final testing phase as a host-supported build target.
