4MLinux version 47.0 has been officially released, introducing several new features and enhancements. This latest iteration follows the earlier release, version 46.0, by nearly four months and is highlighted by its support for installation on virtual KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) block devices, such as /dev/vda1 and /dev/vda2.
Among its new offerings, 4MLinux 47.0 incorporates support for the RECOIL (Retro Computer Image Library) and its GIMP plugin, allowing compatibility with hundreds of old image formats. It has also added several new applications, including Gnome CD Master, Dia, GLiv, XRoar, Gnubik, and GNU Backgammon, accessible via the integrated 4MLinux GamePack.
The server variant, known as 4MServer, has also received updates. This edition facilitates the setup of a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MariaDB, PHP) HTTP/FTP server and includes updated core components such as BusyBox 1.36.1, Perl 5.38.2, Python 3.12.5 and 2.7.18, Ruby 3.3.4, among others.
The default software selection features LibreOffice 24.8, AbiWord 3.0.5, GIMP 2.10.38, Gnumeric 1.12.57, Mozilla Firefox 133.0, Google Chrome 131.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 128.5, Audacious 4.4.2, VLC 3.0.21, SMPlayer 24.5.0, and Wine 9.21. Under the hood, 4MLinux runs on the Linux kernel 6.6 LTS and leverages the Mesa 24.1.5 graphics stack.
